Vibrant new artwork unveiled at Sudbury & Harrow Road Station thanks to funding by Chiltern Railways

The station underpass at Sudbury & Harrow Road Station has been transformed into a vibrant work of art which was funded by a community grant by operator Chiltern Railways.

Reflecting the heritage and history of the station and its local area, the station's new artwork was installed by the Friends of Barham Library, which is the organisation that maintain Barham Community Library, which is a five-minute walk from the station.

It covers the entire underpass and also features a plaque which details the history of the station. Created by mural artist LeSpleen and working with Friends of Barham Library, the artwork reflects the station’s early days as steam trains trundled through the open countryside.

The artwork was unveiled at a launch event which took place today (Tuesday 19 May).

Harry Burr, Community Rail Lead at Chiltern Railways, said:

“The underpass at Sudbury & Harrow Road has been completely transformed as a result of this beautiful new artwork. Our Community Investment Fund is crucial for improving stations and local areas which ultimately provides a better experience for our customers.”

Paul Lorber, from Friends of Barham Library, said:

“We were pleased to work with Chiltern Railways to brighten up Sudbury & Harrow Road Station with a beautiful mural.

“LeSpleen, our talented artist, created an exciting piece of street art that takes us back to a Sudbury of the early 1900s when the railway came to the local countryside full of farms and open spaces.

“We are delighted to be part of a project which created large pieces of new art which is accessible and free for everyone to see.

The Community Investment Fund invests in initiatives that enhance station environments, promote sustainable travel and strengthen community connections.
