Chiltern Railways and the Roald Dahl Museum at Great Missenden Station

New Roald Dahl-themed mural unveiled at Great Missenden Station

A new Roald Dahl-themed mural was unveiled at Great Missenden Station this morning (Friday 28 March).

The impressive large-scale artwork is the result of a collaboration between The Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden, sixth form students from The Misbourne school in the village and mural artist Sólveig Magnúsdóttir.

The unveiling event on 28 March is the culmination of many months of hard work form the project team. The students were involved in every element of the process from helping to interview and select the project artist, through to creative workshops and making key decisions about the mural’s content and composition.

During the project the students learned about Roald Dahl’s creative process and discovered how the local area inspired many of his stories and characters, before developing their own visual ideas relating to Great Missenden - combining elements of the surrounding area, Roald Dahl’s stories and items that have meaning to them.

Emma Bedlow, Project Manager for the Roald Dahl Museum, said: “It’s been a pleasure to work with students from The Misbourne and Sólveig. We’re so proud of the final mural which is testament to all the hard work that’s been put into developing the project. It was fantastic to see the students getting stuck into the artist workshops so thoroughly to create such a great focal point for the station.”

Zach Bailey, Regional Growth Manger at Chiltern Railways, said: “We are delighted to have supported the Roald Dahl Museum and The Misbourne school to create an inspiring mural for Great Missenden station. The mural will bring a sense of community to the station, brightening up the journeys of both our daily commuters and those visiting the beautiful Chiltern’s for leisure trips.”

Sólveig Magnúsdóttir, Project Artist said: "It was such a pleasure deep diving into Roald Dahl’s highly visual worlds, while working with the kind and generous team of The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, and engaging with the brilliant creativity of The Misbourne secondary school students. The result is such a joyful mishmash of creatures and ideas, which we hope makes passers by smile or sparks their curiosity about the locality.”

This project, funded by the Chiltern Railways’ Community Investment Fund, aimed to give practical, real-world skills to the students and increase their creative confidence. It also serves as an inspiring ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’ for the village of Great Missenden.
